Nomination Eligibility and Criteria

 

The Athlete of the Year Award, sponsored by Civitan Sports Waterloo Region

 

This award recognizes athletes from the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo and the Townships of Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich for exceptional achievements for a single calendar year.

For example, athletes’ performances in 2017 will be considered for the 2017 Athlete of the Year Award and recognized at the annual  Athlete of the Year celebration dinner scheduled for Wednesday May 16, 2018, which also marks the 20th year of the program.

 

Eligibility

A nominee must be a current or past resident of the cities of Kitchener or Waterloo, or the townships of Wellesley, Wilmot or Woolwich, and must have maintained full time residency either during the athlete’s performing career and/or during the development of the career.

 

Criteria                                     

Consideration for nomination is based on the participation, achievement and accomplishments of the nominees for a single calendar year. Aspects that are considered include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  1. Level of Competition- for some sports, the Olympics are the highest possible level of competition, whereas for others it may be World Championships or International Competition. Still others may have the highest level of competition at a National, Provincial level, or at some other appropriate level.
  2. Level of Performance - refers to results in relation to competitors at the various levels of competition, including qualifying events en route to the highest level of competition in which the nominees have participated.
  3. Standard of Achievement - refers to the rankings, awards, quality and quantity of accomplishments that the nominees have achieved.
  4. Community Involvement and Leadership – when practical, the award also minimally considers demonstrated involvement and leadership within the sport as well as volunteer activities within the nominees’ communities (K-W or other if athlete resides elsewhere).

 

Nomination and Timing

The public is encouraged to nominate an athlete by completing the Athlete of the Year Nomination Form which can be downloaded (Click Here) and delivered to the Chair of the Nominations Committee. Deadlines vary year-to-year but as a general rule, nominations from the public will be accepted until January 31 of the following year. For example, for a nomination for an athlete’s performance for 2017, the nomination is to be received by January 31, 2018.

(Note that all nominations are not necessarily accepted, depending on standard of achievement by the athlete).
