KW Athlete of the Year Awards for 2018 and 2019
Following a brief 1-year hiatus, the Athlete of the Year Kitchener-Waterloo, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich program will recognize athletic excellence for both 2018 and 2019.
Presentations were to be made on May 26 but the COVID-19 pandemic forced this to be postponed.
Subsequently, the event was changed to a virtual format via ZOOM on Tuesday November 10.
“The Athlete of the Year Program has promoted and celebrated excellence in sport for 20 years. Our foundation, our commitment, our support of and passion for recognizing the achievements of our local athletes is a tremendous legacy to date. Athletes, their families and supporters and the community-at-large have all benefited from this program, and its future continuance is excellent news!” --- Former AotY Chair Jean Howitt (2009 - 2018)
"Building on the success of the program and the solid foundation established under the leadership of past chair Jean Howitt and her team of volunteers, and following several years of collaboration with the Kitchener Sports Association, the program is now officially a program of KSA. That alliance with KSA, plus the influx of several new committed volunteers, augers well for the future continuity of the Athlete of the Year program". --- Current AotY Chair John Thompson
With additional volunteers stepping forward, the Athlete of the Year leadership team has been working for the past several months to rejuvenate the organizing, nomination and selection committees. Preparations are being finalized for the awards ceremony in May, 2020 at which the area's top athletes will be recognized. The event will include nominees and Athlete of the Year award presentations for both 2018 and 2019 to ensure that the annual award tradition continues without a gap.
