Awards – Nomination and History

(A) Athlete of the Year Award (sponsored by Civitan Sports Waterloo Region) – recognizes athletes from Kitchener, Waterloo, Wellesley, Wilmot  and Woolwich for exceptional achievements for a single calendar year. For example, athletes’ performances in 2014 will be considered for the 2014 Athlete of the Year Award and recognized at the annual Athlete of the Year dinner on Wednesday May 20, 2015.

Selection Committee Guidelines

(Up-dated April 2014)

Eligibility:

There are two aspects of eligibility:

  • Nominees must be included in the Nominations Committee report. For the 2014 selection (to be made in early 2015), athletes have been nominated to be considered by the Selection Committee
  • Nominees must be a current or past resident of the Cities of Kitchener or Waterloo, or the Townships of Wellesley, Wilmot or Woolwich, and must have maintained full time residency either during the athlete’s performing career and/or during the development of the career.

 

Athlete’s 2014 Participation and Performance:

The award is largely based on the participation, achievement and athletic accomplishments of the nominees for the calendar year 2014.

1. Level of Competition refers to athlete’s participation:

For some sports, the Olympics are the highest possible level of competition, whereas for others it may be World Championships or International Competition. Still others may have the highest level of competition at a National or Provincial level, or at some other level.  The level of competition is to be considered when evaluating the nominees’ participation.

2. Level of Performance refers to results in relation to competitors at the various levels of competition, including qualifying events en route to the highest level of competition in which the nominees have participated.

3. Standard of Achievement refers to the rankings, awards, quality and quantity of accomplishments that the nominees have achieved.

Community Involvement and Leadership:

The award also considers demonstrated community involvement and leadership and includes leadership within the sport as well as volunteer activities within the nominees’ communities (K-W or other if athlete resides elsewhere).

(B) Awards of Excellence (sponsored by Kitchener Sports Association) – recognizes organizations, teams and individuals from Kitchener, Waterloo, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich for their contributions to the sporting community.

Awards of Excellence – please make nomination of an  organization, team or individual to the Awards of Excellence Committee, chaired by Steve Grant, 55 King Street West, Box #1234, Kitchener, ON N2G  4G9  e-mail: sgrant@kw-law.com

Criteria for Awards of Excellence

Nominees from Kitchener-Waterloo, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich to be recognized as a good community citizen/team/organization serving as a role model within the sporting community.

Consideration  is given to level of involvement in the community, as well as competitive spirit, sportsmanship and enthusiastic support of participants.

Individuals nominated must be volunteers – those who receive remuneration are not eligible.

Deadline – February 28.

Responsibilities of Nominator

  1. Contact the organization, team of individual being nominated to ensure willingness to have name submitted and considered.
  2. Inform the nominee that if the nominee is not selected in the year submitted, the nomination may be considered in a future year.
  3. After receiving approval from the nominee, provide a detailed resume  with rationalestating why the nominee should be considered.
